Conducting orientations is the first opportunity to lay the groundwork for building trust and establishing a relationship with every person using supervised visitation and safe exchange services, but it should not be the only intentional opportunity to engage with each person. The practice of meaningful engagement and checking in are important and intentional opportunities to stay connected to every person using services. A promising practice in the field of supervised visitation and safe exchange work is establishing check-ins, which are intentional times to talk (check-in) with every person who uses program services. Check-ins provide a space for every person using center services to engage with staff and have intentional time with staff that isn’t rushed or would require extra steps to set up or be requested. This resource outlines techniques and examples for staff of supervised visitation and safe exchange programs to employ when checking in with each other and the families they serve.

This course delves into the history and current context of supervised visitation and safe exchange for families experiencing intimate partner violence. During this course, we will explore the importance and role of supervised visitation and safe exchange has in the larger community response to post-separation violence. Additionally, this course will increase participants’ understanding and knowledge of the Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women Supervised Visitation and Safe Exchange Guiding Principles and key strategies that support safety, healing, and change for survivors, children, and people who cause harm.

This publication provides guidance to OVW-funded supervised visitation and safe exchange programs to develop internal and external policies & procedures for supervised visitation & safe exchange programs.

In many cases, individuals impacted by forced marriage go unnoticed when they seek assistance from victim service providers. Understanding the dynamics of power and control that they experience is crucial, as the tactics used by perpetrators to coerce someone into marriage or keep them in an unwanted marriage often mirror those seen in cases of domestic and sexual violence, stalking, and human trafficking. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of how forced marriage intersects with various forms of abuse and will learn more effective strategies for prevention and support.

This advanced webinar focuses on the common needs and barriers survivors of forced marriage face in the help seeking process. Guidance on identifying and responding to forced marriage situations is provided for children and adults at risk. Participants will leave this webinar with an understanding of the laws, civil processes, and other creative strategies that may support advocates in their work with survivors, or those at risk of forced marriage.

Sexual assault advocates and victim services providers can have a transformative impact on the lives of older survivors. Through their training, skills, and empathy, they can help survivors feel seen and believed. They can also support survivors identify the dynamics of sexual violence, recognize available options and resources, and navigate complex social and legal systems. Advocates play a key role in promoting the dignity and respect for older survivors and improving their access to services by challenging ageist ideas that sexual assault doesn’t impact older adults. This resource offers strategies to address sexual assault in later life and raise awareness of this critical issue within this often-overlooked demographic.

Sexual abuse occurs across the lifespan, but sexual abuse in later life is highly under-researched, under-reported and under-discussed—even often not believed to happen at all. This resource aims to bring much needed attention to the issue of sexual abuse in later life.
