Legal Advocacy Webinar Series
A webinar series for Legal Assistance for Victims (LAV) grantees, Expanding Legal Services Initiative (ELSI) grantees and other legal service providers located on or near Tribal communities that serve survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and dating violence.
Tribal Law and Policy Institute welcomes legal service providers, legal advocates, and victim advocates to join our webinar series that will review Tribal sovereignty, civil and criminal jurisdiction; how to draft enforceable protection orders; and the concepts of privacy, confidentiality and privilege and how those concepts relate to victim safety in domestic violence and sexual assault cases.

90-minute webinar formatNavigating divorce and custody can be difficult; when domestic violence is involved, the stakes are even higher. In this session, the presenters will discuss how to better meet a victim’s needs through collaboration between legal advocates/attorneys and victim advocates. Presenters will cover the key elements of divorce and custody cases including a brief review of jurisdiction, physical and digital safety planning, and custody enforceability issues, visitation, empowering victims’ voices, and securing the safety of pets and animals.
Learning Objectives:
After attending this webinar, participants will be better able to work collaboratively as legal service providers and victim advocates to:
- Identify the fundamental principles and practical application of civil jurisdiction as it applies to divorce and custody proceedings.
- Know to look for and apply specific code sections governing custody and visitation in cases involving domestic violence (DV), sexual assault (SA), and stalking.
- Request and apply custody and visitation terms that address common enforceability challenges to ensure long-term stability for families.
- Request child support terms that prioritize the safety and needs of the child.
- Create physical and digital safety plans tailored to the specific risks faced by survivors.
- Implement legal and practical strategies to protect the victim’s voice.
- Implement legal and practical strategies to protect the safety of pets/animals

Trauma-Informed lawyering includes respecting the client’s expertise and ensuring the client’s goals and objectives are met. The presentation will address why Victim’s Rights are beneficial to victims and their families. Next, the webinar focuses on how to navigate multiple jurisdictions. The presentation will address the various definitions of “victim” for purposes of asserting victim’s rights and then moves to enforcement of victim’s rights. The webinar concludes with useful tools to utilize when working with victims asserting their victim’s rights.
