Description
In the United States, FGM/C is illegal under federal law, however, it remains a pressing concern in the U.S. As of the most recent data, 41 states have laws specifically criminalizing FGM/C, leaving 9 states and territories without such laws. Although federal laws still apply, the absence of state-level laws can lead to gaps in local awareness, prevention, and enforcement.

Understanding this history will inform attendees’ approach to prevention and services, including legal protections, and how insights from advocacy efforts can be applied to raising awareness and building partnerships within their communities.

Significant progress has been made in legislation and awareness, but challenges remain. It is crucial to ensure that families and communities are informed about the legal consequences and health impacts of FGM/C and that survivors receive necessary medical, psychological, and legal support. This webinar will explore the history of U.S. laws prohibiting FGM/C, recent legal cases, and prevention challenges. It will also cover advocacy efforts to raise awareness about the impacts of FGM/C and the importance of legal protections for those at risk.

It is imperative that those working to prevent and respond to FGM/C first understand the federal and state laws related to FGM/C. In doing so, advocates and responders can aid in increasing awareness, building partnerships, and improving prevention activities and services to address this issue within the community.

This is an OVW approved webinar. For questions about this session please contact Fairuz Mohammed fgmctta@gwu.edu
