Description

The institute provides an opportunity to learn the practical skills and the legal information needed to begin reaching and representing youth survivors in middle and high school settings. You’ll learn strategies for communicating with and building rapport with minor clients and tips on dealing with their parents/guardians/caregivers. The institute will also explore key legal questions to consider when representing a minor client, such as, who signs the retainer, can a minor consent to services, does the presence of a parent during a communication with your minor client destroy privilege, and more. We’ll also cover the basics of Title IX, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, including how to leverage these laws to support and protect survivors in K-12 schools.
