This webinar and companion discussion session for attorneys will explore the ways in which intersecting systems of oppression (e.g., racism/white supremacy, heterosexism, ableism, sexism, classism, and anti-immigrant bias) increase vulnerability to sexual violence, create barriers to accessing legal services, and are routinely used to undermine the credibility of survivors of sexual violence during legal proceedings. Using an intersectional lens, the webinar will explore the concepts of ideological, institutional, interpersonal, and internalized oppression and provide a framework for identifying and mitigating their impact in the survivor’s case. From the initial intake to presenting a survivor’s claims for relief, participants will learn and practice strategies to lawyer in ways that center survivors, challenge institutional bias, and resist rape culture.
