SUMMARY:The Truth and Consequences of Sexual Choking/Strangulation — What
  We Learned Since 2023
DESCRIPTION:Over the past decade\, rough sex behaviors have become increasi
ngly prevalent and normalized among many young adults in the U.S. and inte
rnationally. The most striking change has been in relation to non-fatal st
rangulation\, which is almost universally called “choking” by the peop
le who engage in it as well as in mainstream media and in pornography. Tod
ay\, there is a growing awareness about and alarming concern with strangul
ation during sex being used in consensual sexual practices\, violent porno
graphy\, and dangerous adolescent “choking games” leading to similar h
ealth consequences and death.\n\nStrangulation has been identified as one
of the most lethal forms of domestic violence and sexual assault: unconsci
ousness may occur within seconds and death within minutes. When domestic v
iolence perpetrators choke (strangle) their victims\, not only is this fel
onious assault\, but it may well be an attempted murder.\n\nIn this eviden
ce-based presentation\, Casey Gwinn will provide context\, Dr. Debby Herbe
nick (a Professor at the Indiana University School of Public Health\, an i
nternationally recognized sexuality researcher\, and author of “Yes Your
Kid: What Parents Need to Know About Today’s Teens and Sex”) will sha
re the most up to date research on how choking/strangulation has rapidly i
ncreased in prevalence\, both as part of consensual sex and in connection
with college campus and community sexual assaults. dating violence\, domes
tic violence\, sexual assault\, and stalking.\n\nResearch findings will be
presented that show how people learn about choking/strangulation\; how th
ey engage in it\; the role of various media (pornography\, social media\,
mainstream media) in shaping this sexual practice\; its prevalence\, frequ
 ency\, short-term symptoms\, health consequences\, and potential neurologi
cal changes.\n\nGael Strack\, will share legal considerations in addressin
g the consent defense\, including practical tips to overcome it during you
r investigation and in court.\n\nThe Panel will discuss possible solutions
\, provide tips and resources. Please join us. There will be time for qu
estions.\n\nWebinar Objectives:\n\n1. Describe the prevalence of sexual ch
oking/strangulation among young U.S. adults.\n\n2. Explain how young adult
s communicate (and don’t communicate) about sexual choking/strangulation
and its implications for sexual assault and violence prevention efforts.\
n\n3. Identify at least three symptoms of having been choked/strangled dur
 ing sex.
